How to Write a Job Description

As the internet continues to become a resourceful tool for almost every aspect of our lives, more and more people are turning to the web for hiring and job searching purposes. These tips are designed to help you in creating the most effective job posting so it may attract the perfect applicants for your company.

1. Use traditional titles. Online job seekers rely heavily on the search option when utilizing a job listing site. Using unprofessional or unconventional terms like “Computer Nerd” or “Photoshop Pro” may not yield as many results as the proper titles, and therefore the posting will not be as easily accessible.

 
2. Organize the content. Be sure to provide all the necessary information needed. Make it so that the material (description, requirements, and contact information) is easy to read and understand. 
 
3. Be clear and specific. Postings that do a poor job in outlining the description and qualifications of the position are often misleading and attract many different people, whether they are right for the job or not. Know exactly what kind of candidate you are looking for and write the posting accordingly. 
 
4. Be upfront. Deter unqualified applicants and unnecessary emails by clearly stating the credentials needed for the job. For example, say something like “only candidates who meet the above requirements will be contacted”.  
 
5. Provide the address. Location is sometimes a major part of the deciding factor for some job seekers. This automatically eliminates anyone who is geographically unable to work at your company. Remember to at least provide the town or general area (ex. Times Square, East Village, etc.) so candidates can assess whether location will be a problem.

6. Include method of contact. This may sound like a no-brainer, but too often do job postings neglect to leave an email address or a phone number. Don’t miss out on finding the right person for the job because they have no way of contacting you.

7. Leave instructions. The best way to do this is to ask the applicant to type in something specific in the subject line of an email. Not only does this easily dismiss those who can not follow directions, but it can help in moderately narrowing down your inbox full of potential employees.
